Ganesha, the Hindu God of new beginnings, welcomes you to the Byron Retreat Centre.

In Byron, I attended a morning yoga class at Byron Bay Yoga Centre. Located in the heart of Byron Bay, it’s a mere 100 meters from the beach and surfer’s paradise.  The class soundtrack lilted through the windows, a mash-up of beach breezes, tropical birds, and the sounds of the surf town waking up for the day.

Peaceful, well-attended, with sunlight streaming in, it was a perfect way to start a day in Byron. I highly recommend a yoga class shortly after arriving and shortly before leaving, to help counteract the mummifying effects of a 14-hour nonstop flight.

Next time, I want to attend one of their yoga retreats.  The verdant retreat centre is just outside Byron, up the road from the weekly Thursday morning farmer’s market and a local brewery, in the midst of jungly hinterlands.  Cumbebin Swamp and Belongil Creek are your neighbors, creating a remote, zen atmosphere for your retreat.

You’ll be paired with a roommate, a great way to build new friendships, or you can pay extra for solo quarters.  Choose your own adventure for a 3-day, 5-day, or 8-day retreat.  Each retreat option includes 1-3 massages or treatments (depending on the length of your stay), all nutritionally-balanced vegetarian meals, and access to herbal teas, fruit, and snacks throughout the day.

Optional outings include surfing, kayaking, hiking, and the Crystal Palace.  I highly recommend a day hike to one of the local waterfalls at the beginning or end of your retreat to complete the experience.  There are some great shops in Byron as well, so schedule an afternoon of retail therapy to check out local designers, beachy boutiques, and cafes.

10:30am – Morning Yoga Class
