Travel insomnia. It’s the phenomenon where I’ve been looking at flights for hours in multiple tabs and memorized a thousand combinations and permutations of ways to get to wherever I am trying to go (currently, the southern hemisphere) and my brain is working so hard it wakes me up in the wee hours of the morning.
Trying to balance travel priorities and flight costs and work schedules and it’s all one big rubix cube game of travel Tetris so my mind wakes me up at 3am. After awhile, I pick up my phone (knowing that even in night mode, screens are not good for sleep hygiene) and just search one flight.
And then I find it! Bingo!
The answer to the puzzle. Because Hawaiian Airlines has a ridiculously cheap flight that will get me home from Auckland after the Splore music festival, give me a 12 hour layover in Honolulu (home sweet home! I lived there 2008-2010 and fell in love) and then I’ll be able to spend my sister’s 40th birthday with her in LA!!
Price, check. Bonus stops, check. Feel great about the deal, check. GOOOOLD
This has happened to me on more than one occasion. While booking flights to Paris for Spring Break (bf never been to Europe!) things were getting all wanky, first prices were going up and then there was only one seat left on the one route we wanted so it ended up that we were flying on separate flights and one was expensive. Never a good way to kick off or close out a romantic vacay, aside from the obvious perks of sleep comfort, shoulders, you know.
Then I woke up at 4am and searched flights.
Price, check. Maximum nonstops, check. Fits within spring break schedule, check. Two seats next to each other, check. GOOOOOOLD
I called and cancelled the original wanky flights (it was within 24 hours, so inside the free cancellation window, a perk of booking directly with airlines as opposed to on bargain websites) and we are set.
I don’t know that this is a travel secret of any sort, since booking flights at 3am and 4am may not be your deal. If you are already an insomniac like me then you can consider this an added benefit. Plus, you wake up and wonder – was that a dream? *Check email for travel confirmations.* No! I really am going to Australia!
What this does illustrate is that flight availability and price fluctuate greatly. I am convinced that whatever you are looking for out there exists – you just have to look at the right time.
